Actress Kangana Ranaut commented on the Hema Committee report, saying that she had raised her voice against sexual harassment in Bollywood years ago, and was labelled ‘problematic’. She said that the report should have been released earlier.
Actress Kangana Ranaut commented on the Justice Hema Committee report and the uproar it created in the Malayalam film industry over the revelations of several sexual predators. The actress spoke in an interview during the promotion of her film ‘Emergency’ and said that the report should have been released during the #MeToo movement when she raised her voice against several sexual harassers in Bollywood.
When asked how the report shocked everyone and brought attention to the sexual harassment prevalent in the Malayalam film industry, Kangana said she was labelled ‘problematic’ when she did so. She said she wanted to empower women who spoke about facing harassment at the hands of powerful people in the industry, but many of those women backtracked later.
Kangana revealed that later when some of the women stopped speaking or withdrew their complaints or started working with their perpetrators, she had to face the criticism “alone”. “I was vocal about this and spoke up in favour of women. But then their silence was bought with money. I kept looking for them, but they disappeared. Some of them signed some films with the same people and I kept looking for them. The Hema Committee report was first submitted to the Kerala government in 2019. However, the government kept it hidden until recently. Kangana said that if the report had come out then, it would have given support to her and those who are trying to speak out against sexual abuse in other film industries.
“Those women came forward and then I tried to build pressure, but their voice was suppressed. If this report had been released at that time, the entire industry would have united. I was left alone and then they started filing cases, trying to put me behind bars,” she said.
The 233-page document detailed the discrimination and exploitation faced by women at all levels in the Malayalam film industry. The report prompted many women in the industry to speak out about their experiences and file police complaints against influential people in the film industry. Director Ranjith, former general secretary and joint secretary of AMMA, Siddique and Baburaj are among the few people who are being investigated for sexual harassment cases.
