Jugal Hansraj recalls Shabana Azmi’s acting style during the shooting of Masoom
Jugal Hansraj recalled how Shabana Azmi deliberately maintained a distance from him during the shooting of Masoom as part of her acting process.
Actors Jugal Hansraj and Shabana Azmi starred together in the 1983 film InnocentIn which she played the role of his stepmother. In an interview, Jugal told that she used to maintain distance from him during the shooting of the film and also told the reason behind it.
Jugal said that Shabana, however, would be friendly with two other child artistes – Urmila Matondkar and Aradhana. He said, “She was very friendly with both the children, because she was a mother and they were her children in the film. But Shabana ji lived a little away from me. (She was very friendly with the other two girls because she was playing their mother in the film, but she kept her distance from me).”
He later realized that he had done this to portray his role more effectively. ,Later it turned out that it was part of her process that she did not want us to come close because that coldness should be visible on the screen. Everyone came to know that there was some discomfort in me and also in my mother. so she was very beautiful (I later learned that this was part of her process, and she didn’t want us to get close because the audience needed to feel the bitterness between us on screen.
