Johnny Depp sees life as a ‘soap opera’ amid defamation suit with Amber Heard
Johnny Depp compared his tumultuous life in a recent interview to that of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani, the subject of his new film ‘Modi.’ Reflecting on his difficulties, Depp described them as akin to a ‘television soap opera,’ a nod to his defamation lawsuit with Amber Heard.

During a recent press interview, Johnny Depp drew parallels between his personal struggles and those of Amedeo Modigliani, the protagonist of his latest film Modi – Three Days on the Wings of Madness. Reflecting on his turbulent life, Depp described it as being like a “television soap opera,” an apparent reference to his high-profile defamation lawsuit with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
When asked to compare his life to that of the bohemian artist Modigliani, Depp said, Diversity“Sure, we can say I’ve been through a lot of things here and there, but I’m okay.” He then alludes to his courtroom drama with Heard, adding, “I think we’ve all been through a lot of things, at the end of the day… maybe your case hasn’t turned into a soap opera or been televised, but we all experience and go through what we go through.”
The film Modi chronicles 72 intense hours in the life of bohemian artist Amadeo Modigliani, played by Riccardo Scamarcio. Set in war-torn Paris in 1916, the story shows Modi hiding from the police after a gunfight at a posh restaurant.
Amid a decline in his career and personal life, the artist contemplates his future, inspired by the advice of his friend and art dealer Leopold Zborowski (played by Stephen Graham). Taking a bold gamble, Modi arranges a meeting with American collector Maurice Gangnut (played by Al Pacino), who has the power to catapult him to global stardom.
Like Modigliani, Depp also hinted at the idea of persevering in the face of adversity and finding your place in the world. Though the two are different in time and profession, they both had to “make their mark” amid the chaos.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation suit became one of the most talked-about issues in 2022. The actor eventually won the lawsuit filed against his ex-wife Amber. Johnny Depp had sued Amber Heard for defaming him in a 2018 Washington Post article in which she described herself as a victim of domestic abuse.
Netflix also released a three-part documentary series based on the case titled Depp v Heard, which will be released on August 16, 2023.
