Joe Biden vs Donald Trump: Key dates in the 2024 US presidential race

Must read

President Joe Biden, a Democrat, and Republican former President Donald Trump will face each other in the 2024 presidential election, which is expected to be a divisive and close contest.

Here’s a timeline of events from the Nov. 5 election to Inauguration Day in January 2025.

2024

, 11 JulyTrump, the first current or former US president to be convicted of a crime, will be sentenced in the Manhattan hush money case, where he was convicted of falsifying documents to conceal payments to keep a porn star quiet. He has denied wrongdoing and plans to appeal.

, 15-18 JulyThe Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the party formally selects its nominee.

, At the end of July or laterVice President Kamala Harris has agreed to debate Trump’s yet-to-be-announced running mate on CBS on either of the proposed dates of July 23 or August 13. Trump has accepted a vice presidential debate to be hosted by Fox News.

Fox has written to both campaigns suggesting July 23, August 13 or other dates after the party conventions. Trump’s campaign has not yet said whether his fellow candidate will debate Harris on CBS. Nor has the Biden campaign said whether Harris will debate on Fox.

, Till 7th AugustDemocrats are set to hold a “virtual roll call” to nominate Biden. That would happen by August 7, the original ballot certification deadline in Ohio, although that date has been moved up.

Biden was scheduled to be officially nominated at the Democratic National Convention in late August.

, 19-22 August: Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

, 10 SeptemberThe second debate between Biden and Trump will be hosted by ABC.

, 5 November: election Day

, later in novemberElection results can take several days to come out, especially if the contest is close and mail-in ballots are factored in.

2025

, 6 January: The vice president presides over the counting of the Electoral College votes in a joint session of Congress, announcing the results and declaring who has been elected. Before the count on January 6, 2021, then-President Trump berated his vice president, Mike Pence, for refusing to try to stop Congress from certifying Biden’s victory. That day, the U.S. Capitol was attacked by rioters, and some chanted “Hang Mike Pence” as they tried to stop the count. Both houses of Congress later resumed their work and certified Biden’s victory.

Congress has since passed the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act of 2022, which requires the approval of one-fifth of the House and Senate to consider challenging a state’s results — a much higher standard than previously, when any lawmaker from each chamber could launch a challenge.

, 20 JanuaryThere is a swearing-in ceremony for the election winner and his vice president. In this ceremony, the winner and the vice president are officially sworn into office.
