Outgoing President Joe Biden is the best-suited person to take on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in November’s election, his campaign said Friday.
“The president is in this race. You’ve heard him say that over and over again,” Biden-Harris campaign chairwoman Jen O’Malley Dillon told MSNBC in an interview, a day after Trump accepted the nomination as the Republican presidential nominee for the November general election.
Many Democrats at the highest levels want Trump to step down from the 2024 election to make way for a new nominee and prevent the party from suffering sweeping losses in November.
Dillon stressed that Biden is committed to fighting against Trump.
Dillon said, “I think we saw last night why that is. Because Donald Trump is not going to offer the American people anything new. He’s the same person he was in 2020. He’s the same person he was on the debate stage. He’s the same person — what he thinks about himself, not about the American people. Joe Biden is more committed than ever to defeating Donald Trump.”
Dillon said, “We believe in this campaign. We’re prepared for this close election, and we see a path forward. The president is the leader of our campaign and the country, and in our perception, in what we’ve built and in our engagement with voters, he’s clearly the best person to face Donald Trump and prosecute that case and present our perspective as opposed to what we saw last night.”
“The president has the delegates. He has the support. He was elected by 14 million voters in this process. By 81 million in 2020, which is more than any person before him. The broad coalition of people standing with the president is bigger and broader than the people who don’t want him to run, and these are the people who are working in the states that really matter, and I believe that when we’re able to take the case to Donald Trump, we’ll have the time to do that, and we can bring home to those people who have some concerns today or who are a little undecided because when they look at both of them going forward and the vision they have for this country, I have no doubt in my mind that the American people are going to be with Joe Biden,” Dillon said.
“This is definitely a tough time for the campaign,” Dillon said.
“But when the president is talking to voters and is with them, when voters have seen him, seen him lay out the contradictions, shown that he’s doing a job of leading this country and his (candidacy), they see him as someone who’s going to win,” Dillon said.
