Jigra Review: Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina’s film looks good as an emotional brother-sister story, but not at all as a jailbreak thriller-drama.

plot:

Satya (Alia Bhatt) and Ankur (Vedang Raina) are orphans. Satya, being the elder, is extremely protective of her brother and is like a parent to him. He lives with a rich and powerful relative. Satya never feels that he or his brother are part of their family.

Ankur is a programmer. He is good friends with Kabir, the son of the relative with whom Satya and Ankur live. They go to Hanshi Dao, an island in Southeast Asia, to pitch a business idea. One night, when Ankur and Kabir are returning to their hotel room, they are caught by the local police. Kabir is a drug dealer but Ankur is wrongly implicated, thanks to Kabir’s powerful father. Ankur has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Now it is up to Satya to save his innocent brother from electrocution in Hanshi Dao prison. Will she be able to save her brother? Watch Jigra to know this.

what works for jigra

What really works for Jigra is the strong brother-sister bond. Alia Bhatt as a protective sister who will go to any extent to save her innocent brother makes you root for her, even if she is not always morally right. What Vedang Raina’s character has to endure in jail is shown so effectively that it breaks you to the core. The cinematography and background score of the film is excellent. Lastly, the song Phoolo Ka Taron Ka (reprise version) has been used beautifully.

What doesn’t work for liver

Jigra’s story lacks innovation and the plot is as thin as paper. It’s much longer than it should have been and could have been. While the first half of the film flows smoothly, the second half throws logic out the window. In the movie Jailbreak, logic is of utmost importance and is heavily compromised. Looking back, the emotional payoff in the second half is good.

Jigra doesn’t have enough enthusiasm to make it different. It doesn’t have enough adrenaline-pumping sequences to give you the high you need. What could have been a smart jailbreak movie turns out to be a movie where you have to suspend your senses to make an impact.

Performance in Jigra:

Alia Bhatt is relatable as Satya. She holds the film together as best she can. She nails it in the emotional scenes till the end. Vedang Raina is very good as Ankur. He puts his heart and soul into the character. The scene where a fellow prisoner attacks him is emotionally tense. You feel his pain. Vivek Gomber is dangerous as the jailer. He makes you hate him. Manoj Pahwa plays the role of the father of a prisoner who was falsely implicated by the Hanshi Dao police. Other supporting actors of the film have also done a good job.

final call:

Vasan Bala’s jigra is a mixed bag. It’s too incoherent and illogical to be a smart jailbreak movie, but as an emotional drama centered on a brother and sister relationship it largely succeeds.
