Tamil film Jana Nayagan is registering sensational pre-sales both domestically and overseas. Vijay starrer films are known to take off on a massive scale, and this film marking his swan song before his foray into politics is making it even hotter. Just three days before its release, the film has earned more than Rs 50 crore. 50 crore sales worldwide.
This included pre-sales of over US$4 million for the weekend from overseas markets. A large portion of this has come from the opening day alone, a staggering amount of around US$3.30 million. In major Tamil markets like Malaysia and Europe, Jana Nayagan is recording one of the best, if not the best, progress ever for not only Tamil but Indian films. In the United States, where the Telugu diaspora is the main driver, the film is outsold by the Prabhas starrer The Raja Saab, which premiered on the same day.
To give you some specifics, the film went on sale in Malaysia yesterday and recorded an unprecedented 50K sales in the very first hour. By the end of the day, the number of tickets for the first day was around 100K, which it crossed this morning. For some perspective, only two films have managed to sell more than 100,000 tickets on their first day; Jana Naygan accomplished this on her very first day, with three days to spare. The final number may exceed 200K or more, as capacity is provided. Sales have not started yet in other Tamil markets like Singapore and Sri Lanka. When they do, similar scenes are expected there too.
Domestically the film grossed approximately Rs. 15 crore sales, again, most of which was on the opening day. Karnataka leads in terms of sales, while in the home state, Tamil Nadu, the entire sales scheme is not open yet, but whatever is open is selling well. Normally, the film would have aimed to break all the existing opening records in Tamil Nadu, but it is not a single release, which will keep it short. Despite this, the opening will be huge, and then it will have a highly lucrative Pongal holiday period on weekdays, which will see huge collections.
Vijay has dominated the Tamil box office for almost a decade. His exit from films will leave a huge void and it is not clear what the box office situation will be like, but as of now, the box office volcano is going to erupt this week.
