Jamie Lee Curtis has paid a touching tribute to late actor Robert Carradine, remembering him as her “first crush” and reflecting on their 1970s relationship after news of his death. The Oscar-winning actor looks back on his early years with warmth, humor and deep affection and recalls how a television encounter became a formative chapter in his life.

In an emotional Facebook post, Jamie Lee Curtis shared the first time she met Robert Carradine live dina shore show. She remembered how Carradine had rearranged the seating so he could sit next to her and kissed her in the air, and described it as “a very public meet-cute”.

Curtis recalled how their relationship soon became more intimate and domestic. He talked about visiting Carradine’s three-year-old daughter, Ever, in the burn unit after the child suffered serious injuries. Curtis described Evers as a little girl wrapped in gauze, smiling brightly, and said that the three of them soon became “a little family” living in an earthen-floored house in Laurel Canyon.

She reflected on experiencing domestic life, partnership, and the maternal role for the first time, walking to the local market, washing clothes at the neighborhood laundromat, and folding a child’s clothes. Curtis described those years in Laurel Canyon in the late 1970s as simple and beautiful.

Curtis also recalled Carradine’s later relationship with Melanie Griffith, noting how life became complete when Griffith later became one of his closest friends. She shared that Griffith was the one who informed her about Carradine’s death.

Recalling Carradine’s personality, Curtis wrote of his love of racing cars and driving fast through Mulholland Drive, commenting that it was a miracle he never got hurt. She also recalled the moment she suddenly recognized him in The Cowboys and later realized that he was her first on-screen crush.

Despite the end of their romantic relationship, Curtis said they remained friends over the years, as did his relationship with Evers. She also mentioned that Carradine later starred in The Long Riders, a film starring her husband Christopher Guest. Summarizing his journey, he referred to it as a “long and winding road” and signed off with the words, “Rest in speed, humor and love, Bobby.”

Carradine’s family confirmed his death in a statement, remembering him as a ray of light to those around him. He acknowledged his long battle with bipolar disorder and expressed hope that sharing his story would help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, while he requested privacy as he mourned.
