Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsi has created a new WhatsApp rival app called Bichhat, a Bluetooth Mesh messaging app that works without Wi-Fi or mobile network, which offers private, encrypted communication for users even during outage or internet blackouts.

In short

  • Bitchat runs on Bluetooth, no internet or accounts are required
  • End-to-end encrypted, messages disappear and are never stored online
  • Inspired by decentralization, designed for privacy and flexibility

Twitter co-founder and block CEO Jack Dorsi has quietly launched a new messaging app called Bichhat, which is fully designed to work without an internet connection or mobile network. Built in a weekend as an individual experiment, the bitch runs on Bluetooth Aries networking and allows users to chat safely and anonymously using only nearby equipment. In a post on X (East Twitter), the Daisi described the project as the exploration of “Bluetooth Aries Network, Relay and Store and Forward Models, Message Encryption Models and some other things”.

The app is now available through a testflight in Beta, and Daisi has released a technical whitepaper that describes architecture on Github.

Unlike traditional messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Messenger, the middle does not require a phone number, email or even an account. It works by forming groups of nearby phones on Bluetooth low energy (BLLE), passing the encrypted messages directly from the device to the device. These messages can continue hopping in equipment – effectively relay through peers – until they reach the desired recipient, even if the person is beyond the normal Bluetooth range.

The messages are end-to-end encrypted and disappear by default. Nothing is stored on the central server, and the app collects any personal data. As Daisi says, the middle has been created to prioritize privacy and flexibility: “No server, no infrastructure dependence message is not just a default form in device memory.”

The concept of Aries-based, offline messaging is not completely new. During the 2019 Hong Kong protests, activists rely on similar Bluetooth-based equipment to bypass the Internet shutdown. The bitch of Daisi takes the idea forward by introducing features like “room” for group chat, using @handles, and uses password-protected conversion locations.

The app also includes a store-forward mechanism, which allows messages to be saved on a device and is later distributed when a user comes back to the range-especially useful for those temporarily offline. In the future, Dorsi plans to add Wi-Fi direct support to increase both the limits and speed of communication. Whitepaper underlines many use cases, ranging from disaster response and community coordination to large programs or during internet blackouts. Privacy features include Opt-in-Cowl Bizing, Channel-level permission control and cryptographic identity isolation.

“The middle indicates that safe, private messages without centralized infrastructure, are possible,” called whitepaper. “By combining Bluetooth Aries Networking, End-to-end encryption and privacy-protection protocol, it provides flexible communication that works anywhere people who gather.”
