Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the dissolution of his six-member war cabinet, multiple reports citing officials said on Monday. It was a widely expected move as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the dissolution of his six-member war cabinet, multiple reports citing officials said on Monday. The move follows the resignation of centrist former general Benny Gantz last week.
The Israeli prime minister’s right-wing coalition partners have been pushing for the formation of a new war cabinet since Gantz announced his resignation from Netanyahu’s emergency government. He was the only centrist leader in the war cabinet.
In addition to breaking away from the coalition last week, Gantz also took with him Gadi Eisenkot, one of three war cabinet supervisors.
The dissolution came as no surprise, as far-right National Security Minister Ben Gweir had been lobbying to join the forum.
According to news agency Reuters, Netanyahu will now discuss the ongoing Gaza war with a small group of ministers, including Defense Minister Yoav Galant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, who were part of the war cabinet.
Ben Gvir will also be excluded from these consultations, the Times of Israel reports.
Benny Gantz’s ouster from the war cabinet comes at a time when he had earlier Netanyahu given June 8 deadline Committing to an agreed version of the ongoing conflict in Gaza that would include determining who would rule Gaza after a war with Hamas. Gantz had threatened to leave the war cabinet and withdraw his centrist party from the emergency cabinet.
Gantz announced his resignation on 9 June.
