background of battlefield The devastating famine of 1876–78 is one of the deadliest tragedies during British rule. Large parts of southern India, including Rayalaseema, were severely affected due to the weakening of agricultural communities due to repeated droughts. When the monsoon failed in 1876, starvation spread rapidly throughout the region.

Historical accounts show that grain exports from India continued during the crisis, while relief measures initiated by the British official Sir Richard Temple included strict austerity policies and famine camps with minimum rations. About seven lakh people are believed to have died in Rayalaseema alone, while lakhs of people died across the country.

The film is said to explore the disorganized rebellions that emerged in famine-stricken areas. According to regional folklore, desperate communities attacked hoarded grain, protested heavy taxation, and struggled for survival. Although many of these incidents were recorded as criminal acts in colonial records, local narratives remember them as resistance born of extreme hardship.

Directed by Rahul Sankrityayan and produced by Y.K. under the banner of Mythri Movie Makers in association with T-Series. Produced by Ravi Shankar and Naveen Yerneni, Raanabali also stars international actor Arnold Vosloo and is scheduled to release in theaters on September 11, 2026.

Off-screen, the two recently celebrated their wedding reception in Hyderabad on March 4 after getting married in a private ceremony in Udaipur on February 26. The wedding incorporated Andhra and Kodava traditions, reflecting the cultural backgrounds of both families.
