“Living here is the privilege of a lifetime. And I’ll do that until the voice in my head says, ‘It’s time,’ says Tim Cook when asked how long he sees himself as Apple’s CEO. “It’s hard to imagine life without Apple, because my life has been entangled with this company since 1998. It’s a big part of my adult life. And that’s why I love it,” he said in an interview with Wired. Cook noted that he will begin planning his next chapter when he feels it is time to step down, but that time has not yet come.
This year, questions and rumors have repeatedly surfaced regarding the end of Tim Cook’s tenure. “As I get older, my hair gets grayer…I get asked this question more now than ever,” says Cook, 64.
In fact, there is much speculation about who could be his successor as CEO. Many names have come up in the last few months. The most recent Bloomberg report revealed that John Ternes could be the frontrunner for the position of the next Apple CEO.
Ternes serves as Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook. With over 23 years of experience at the company, he has played a key role in developing some of Apple’s most well-known products, such as the iPhone, iPad, and AirPods. His leadership has been instrumental in overseeing the transition of the Mac to Apple silicon, highlighting his significant contributions to Apple’s innovation.
Apart from Turnus, the company’s chief operating officer (COO) Jeff Williams has long been considered the frontrunner. However, at 61, Williams’ age could be a drawback for Apple’s board, which is likely looking for a leader who can run the company for at least a decade, similar to the tenures of Steve Jobs and Tim Cook. Other names reportedly under consideration include senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi, senior vice president of hardware engineering Dan Riccio, senior vice president of retail Deirdre O’Brien, and Phil Schiller, who now serves as an Apple Fellow. However, the chances of these candidates landing the top role are seen as low.
