Sticky, melty, and absolutely delicious – paneer is one ingredient that has an evergreen fan base. Whether sprinkled on top of hot pizza, used to add creaminess to sandwiches, or eaten whole, cheese has a special place in our hearts and kitchens. Due to its ubiquity and long shelf life, we can find store-bought gooey cottage cheese in almost every household. But while it’s easy to love its rich flavor and creamy texture, most of us don’t realize that these store-bought treats can do more harm than good to our bodies. Have you ever wondered how store-bought cheese is affecting your health? If yes, then you have come to the right page. Read on to find out how store-bought cheese can impact your overall health.

Here’s how processed cheese is hurting your health

According to Ayurvedic health coach Dimple Jangra, store-bought cottage cheese may be a popular option, but it may be unknowingly harming your health.

  1. long shelf life

The cheese you buy from the store lasts longer because of preservatives, emulsifiers, and artificial colors. If you leave that piece of cheese in your refrigerator and check on it after six months, you will find that it is still in the same condition. According to the expert, this shows that it is not edible even for fungus and mold, so how can it be good for the human digestive system? Therefore avoid eating processed cheese.

  1. packed with sodium

Did you know that one slice of cheese has 400 mg of sodium? Yes, you read that right! While making paneer sandwiches or other dishes, we use at least 3-4 slices to enjoy the smoothness of paneer. However, this may increase your daily sodium intake. According to experts, eating a slice of processed cheese can cause high blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease.

  1. deprived of nutrients

Processed cheese is stripped of nutrients during its manufacturing process. Although you may think it provides the calcium you need, it does not. According to the expert, you are eating nothing but preservatives, additives and unhealthy fats.

What can you get instead?

Instead of store-bought, preservative-laden paneer, you can opt for natural paneer which has a shorter shelf life. This includes cheese, cottage cheese, mozzarella and feta cheese sourced from cruelty-free brands. Another great option is to make your own cheese at home.

How to make your own cheese at home:

  1. Take a handful of cashews and soak them overnight.

  2. Next morning, mix them with some water. You can add salt, parsley, or herbs like basil or dill. Blend again to a smooth consistency.

  3. Pour the mixture into a container and freeze. Your homemade paneer is now ready for consumption!
