Is Kathryn Hahn’s Marvel series Agatha completely inspired by Kate Winslet’s drama ‘Mary of Easttown’? Find out

Must read

Kathryn Hahn is leading a Marvel Cinematic Universe series for the first time, but she has taken some inspiration from films she is passionate about and one of them is Kate Winslet’s drama Marge of Easttown. Agatha All Along, which premiered two episodes, showed Agatha aka Agnes trapped under the spell of the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) at the end of WandaVision.

She was cast in a prestige crime drama called Agnes of Westview, in which Hahn tried to replicate Winslet’s detective character Mare Sheehan. “I watched Mare of Easttown a lot when it came out and I was very influenced by it,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “So (Agnes of Westview) was definitely a love letter to that genre of show,” she added.

The spin-off series revolves around “a spellbound Agatha Harkness who gains freedom with the help of a teen. Moved by his plea, she undergoes trials on the witches’ path to regain her powers and discover the teen’s motivations,” according to the official synopsis. Hahn’s character was first featured in WandaVision and eventually became a key part of the plot, and now has her own show.

Speaking about her journey, the actress admitted that she “never saw it” in her future. “It’s just a field that I felt wasn’t open to me. I felt it was something I wouldn’t find myself in,” she added.

The Bad Moms actress explained how she felt when she was offered the role of the witch in the MCU, which helped her break many molds. “I was so excited. I was just giddy. And Agatha is really always the main character in their minds,” she said about leading her own MCU show.

Hahn further explained that telling her character’s journey in her own space felt “oddly natural”. She added, “It feels natural that she goes from being a lonely witch to a witch who needs a coven, despite her own feelings.”

The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are available on the Disney+ streaming platform, with subsequent episodes premiering on October 30.
