Netflix is expected to release Barbie director Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia in December 2026. At the moment, final details are still being negotiated, according to Bloomberg, but the streaming giant seems eager to adapt the fantasy series. Even for big screens.
Netflix reportedly acquired the rights to all seven books in CS Lewis’s iconic series in 2018, but much work didn’t happen on the project until 2023, when Gerwig joined the project as writer and director. The news comes the same month that her blockbuster Barbie painted the world pink and became a huge pop culture phenomenon.
Gerwig’s involvement has raised the stakes on the reboot. According to Collider, actor Jason Isaacs accidentally dropped a huge hint about the Lady Bird director’s Netflix project during an interview with The Week, where he discussed his favorite books. He may have teased that Gerwig might make a prequel to Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, aka The Magician’s Nephew.
Isaac said, “I loved all the Narnia books as a child. When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality. I picked it up because Greta Gerwig was on it. “Gonna make a movie I can’t wait to see.”

According to Puck News and Bloomberg, negotiations are reportedly underway for a theatrical release for the franchise, including a potential IMAX deal. Gerwig is pushing for a wide theatrical debut before the film begins streaming. However, the outlets’ insiders say Netflix is wary of setting a precedent for expensive theatrical deals, and IMAX is wary of making sure the film meets its standards.
Netflix will be the first to adapt the rights to all seven books, whereas earlier productions at Disney and Walden Media included only three books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage Of the Dawn Treader (2010).
Greta Gerwig’s reboot is poised to become a massive franchise, as all seven novels in the series feature different adventures spanning centuries with different characters and stories. While fans wait for more updates, those who want to rewatch the original Nariya movies can stream on Hulu, Disney+, and Max.
