Responding to the controversy, Flipkart confirmed to India Today Tech that the cancellation fee is not a recent change. The company clarified that this policy has been in place for two years and is only applicable if an order is canceled 24 hours after it is placed. There is no charge for orders canceled within the first 24 hours, giving customers a free window to change their mind.

As per Flipkart’s official policy, cancellation charges are applied to cover the costs incurred by sellers and logistics partners in preparing and processing orders for shipment. The company explained that the fee is designed to compensate for the expense incurred when an order is canceled after it has already been processed. Flipkart says that the charges are either equal to or less than the actual cost incurred due to cancellation.

The policy specifically states that the cancellation fee compensates the effort, time and resources spent by the seller and logistics providers. The fee is deducted from the amount paid by the customer for canceled orders, and Flipkart has the flexibility to modify or waive the fee depending on the situation.

Although this policy has been in existence for some time, it seems that many customers were unaware of it until now, which is evident in the comments section. However, Flipkart says there is nothing new in this policy and the fee is aimed at balancing the operational losses caused by late cancellations. Despite the protests, the company says the fee is fair and helps support the overall efficiency of the platform.
