Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are working on developing new story ideas for a Barbie sequel. Early development is underway for the Margot Robbie blockbuster that is set to paint the world pink by raking in USD 1.4 billion at the box office in 2023.

Although both Warner Bros. and Mattel, the filmmakers have stated that it will only be in the books if the writers find inspiration for a potential follow-up film. However, The Hollywood Reporter’s sources tell us that Gerwig and Baumbach recently went to the studio to pitch an idea. Overall, it is reported that it is still in very early development, and negotiations regarding contracts and timing have just begun.

Despite box office success and popularity, the deal for Barbie 2 was never completed. Both Gerwig and Baumbach were adamant that a sequel would only be made if it had a great story. Gerwig said at Time’s Women of the Year event in March 2024 that she is passionate about telling stories that connect with people’s hearts.

According to insiders, what they’ve got now is that the pair have a concept they’re excited about and are starting to lay some groundwork. However, the rumors have not been confirmed by any author yet.

Gerwig previously told People that she hopes her film will “launch a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies.” Speaking to the outlet about the sequel, she said, “There’s a tone, a humor, and a joy, and obviously the world is beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land.”

Margot Robbie’s Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, received eight Oscar nominations, winning Best Original Song for Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell’s hit track What Was I Made For. The pop cultural phenomenon stars Ryan Gosling as Kane, America Ferrera as Gloria, Emma Mackey as physicist Barbie, Will Ferrell as Mattel CEO, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera and many more in supporting roles. Appeared.

Fans can now look forward to returning to Barbie Land not so far down the road.
