Apple’s long-term iPhone roadmap is starting to come into focus, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be one of the most talked-about models in the lineup. Apple is said to be preparing its first foldable iPhone, but the company is not backing down from its traditional flagship strategy. Reports suggest that the standard iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models are very much part of the plans, with a number of hardware and design changes being considered for the 2026 launch window. Design and other changes
From the outside, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may not look all that different at first glance. The leak shows that Apple is sticking to a familiar overall design language, which includes a triple rear camera setup placed on an elevated camera plateau, similar to recent Pro models. As noted, there may be subtle refinements. One rumor suggests a slightly transparent ceramic shield area around the MagSafe charging zone, though what this will look like in real-world use is still unclear.
The front of the phone is where things can start to feel different. Multiple reports suggest that Apple is testing a new display layout that removes the dynamic island entirely, replacing it with a single hole-punch cutout located at the top-left corner for the selfie camera. However, this is far from settled. Some industry watchers believe Apple will retain Dynamic Island but make it significantly smaller rather than removing it entirely.
Physically, the iPhone 18 Pro Max may feel more solid in the hand. It is believed to be thicker than the existing Pro Max, a move that will likely allow Apple to fit a larger battery. This extra weight could increase the weight of the phone by more than 240 grams, making it the heaviest iPhone ever. For reference, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is said to weigh around 233 grams, so the jump may be noticeable.
In terms of finish, Apple may move away from the two-tone look seen on recent Pro models. The rear glass is reportedly being reworked to better match the aluminum frame, creating a more uniform appearance. Additionally, Apple is said to be experimenting with a new “special” color for the iPhone 18 Pro series. The colors in question include coffee brown, deep purple and deep burgundy tones.
Display
The display size is expected to remain unchanged. The iPhone 18 Pro is likely to retain the 6.3-inch screen, while the Pro Max should continue with a 6.9-inch panel, maintaining continuity with the existing Pro lineup.
One of the most talked about upgrades is the under-display Face ID. Apple is believed to be testing technology that hides the TrueDepth camera system beneath the display using a specially engineered micro-transparent glass layer. This will allow infrared sensors to work without any interference. While some sources claim this technology could debut with the iPhone 18 Pro models, others are skeptical, suggesting that Apple may not be ready to roll it out on a large scale just yet.
There is also disagreement over the fate of Dynamic Island. Wayne Ma of The Information has suggested only a pinhole design without any dynamic island, while Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has hinted at a thinner version of the dynamic island instead. Chinese tipster Instant Digital has echoed the latter viewpoint, claiming that users should expect a small dynamic island without under-display Face ID or an under-display camera. Apple is also reportedly working on miniaturizing the front camera hardware, which could help reduce the size of the cutout regardless of the final design.
Camera upgrade?
Camera upgrades are expected to be a major focus for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. One of the main rumors is the introduction of a variable aperture on the main camera. This will give users more manual control over how much light enters the sensor, helping to manage overexposure and more flexibility with depth of field. Both the main and telephoto lenses are said to have larger apertures, which should improve performance in low light.
On the hardware side, Apple may turn to Samsung for a new three-layer stacked image sensor on at least one Pro model. This advanced sensor design is expected to improve responsiveness, reduce noise, and provide better dynamic range, which should translate into more consistent photo and video results.

A significant jump may also be seen in connectivity. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to debut Apple’s next-generation C2 modem. The chip is said to be more capable than the current C1 and C1X modems and could eventually bring mmWave 5G support back to Apple’s in-house modem lineup, closing the performance gap with Qualcomm’s solutions.
Chipset
Powering everything will likely be Apple’s A20 chip. Built on TSMC’s 2nm process, the A20 is expected to offer considerable gains in both performance and efficiency. Early estimates suggest it could be about 15 percent faster and 30 percent more energy-efficient than the A19. The chip is also suggested to use TSMC’s wafer-level multi-chip module technology, which integrates RAM directly on the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and neural engine. This approach can improve Apple Intelligence performance, extend battery life, and free up internal space for other components.
However, this cutting-edge technology doesn’t come cheap. 2nm chips are said to be quite expensive to manufacture, reportedly costing at least 50 percent more than current 3nm chips. As a result, Apple may limit the A20 or A20 Pro chips to higher-end models. Some leaks suggest that the standard iPhone 18 may use the A20, while the Pro model gets a more powerful A20 Pro edition.
