Apple is planning to launch a new iPhone that will be as sleek as the MacBook Air and iPad Air and possibly be part of an “Air” version of its iPhone lineup. While there have been reports about this new iPhone 17 Air likely launching in 2025, a new report now hints that Apple’s plans to make its devices thinner are not limited to just the iPhone Air models, but its entire product line. Lineup is limited.
According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on its next generation of devices that includes a new in-house modem. This modem is likely to reduce Apple’s dependence on Qualcomm chips and contribute to making the upcoming iPhones and Macs thinner and sleeker.
Gurman explains that development of Apple’s new modem, codenamed “Sinop”, is in progress. This modem is expected to launch in 2025, allowing Apple to provide significant upgrades to the design and connectivity options of its devices. Gurman says the Sinop will be smaller and more energy-efficient than the Qualcomm chips currently in use. Its reduced size and power requirements could allow Apple to reduce internal components, paving the way for thinner and lighter devices.
The launch of these thin devices is expected to begin in early 2025, starting with the iPhone SE 4. This much-awaited affordable iPhone could be the first device from Apple to feature an in-house modem, with other devices to follow.
Gurman’s report also highlights that Apple’s new modem could expand to other product categories. Lower-end iPads may adopt the modem in 2025, followed by Pro models in 2026. Additionally, the Vision Pro headset and potentially lightweight AR glasses could benefit from this technological advancement.
Regarding the iPhone Air, Gurman mentioned that Apple is planning to launch a new iPhone model, codenamed “D23”, which could become the thinnest iPhone ever. By reducing internal component space, Apple may be able to include larger batteries and advanced camera systems without compromising the smooth form factor for which the brand is famous.
The report also hints at Apple’s possible entry into the foldable phone market. Although details are scarce, the compact design enabled by the Sinop modem could be an important step towards foldable devices. The move would mark Apple’s debut in a category currently dominated by competitors like Samsung and Huawei.
