With the iPhone 16 series available in India, attention is turning to next year’s iPhone 17, thanks to early leaks suggesting a major display upgrade. According to Ross Young, a reliable source at Apple Display News, the iPhone 17 will feature ProMotion technology, which basically means a 120Hz display. The feature was previously reserved for the Pro models and is now rumoured to make it to the standard models as well, to offer a smoother scrolling and video playback experience, reports MacRumors.
This would be a big upgrade to the standard iPhone models, which currently operate at a 60Hz refresh rate. The display could also drop to a more power-efficient rate when not in use, similar to the always-on feature in the Pro models.
The addition of ProMotion may also prevent users from upgrading this year, as this display improvement was initially expected with the iPhone 16 series. Now that the iPhone 17 is likely to include this long-awaited feature, potential buyers may want to wait for a 2025 release instead.
Young’s track record is pretty strong, having accurately predicted the iPhone 16 Pro’s larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays. While it’s unclear whether the iPhone 17 will have a 10Hz or 1Hz low-end refresh rate, the move to ProMotion is enough to create a buzz. Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025.
Next year, Apple is also going to introduce a new model, which will be called the “iPhone 17 Air”. It will reportedly be thinner and also feature a 120Hz display. The device is being considered as a replacement for the Plus series. Hence, we may not see the iPhone 17 Plus model next year. The iPhone 16 Plus could be the last Plus model from Apple, unless the company decides to change its decision based on the sales demand of the current version.
