iPhone 16 series will have game-changing camera upgrades, will be launched next month
The iPhone 16 line-up will be launched globally in September this year. Along with major changes to iOS, the series is also expected to get a boost in the camera system. Let’s see how.
Listen to the story

Apple is set to launch the new line-up of iPhone 16 in a matter of weeks. The global launch is expected to take place on September 10. Although Apple is still keeping the details under wraps, leaks and rumours are spreading online. In a recent leak, the iPhone 16 smartphones will have a better camera than ever before. As per a report by AppleInsider, rumour has it that Apple is planning to bring major changes, including a high-resolution ultra-wide camera and an alleged capture button.
The report suggests that the new iPhone 16 series will use a new format for images. This new format is being called JPEG-XL. It will be available alongside HEIF, JPEG, HEIF Max, ProRaw and ProRAW Max that are available now.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus: Leaked camera specifications
According to the report, both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature dual-camera setups on the back panel. The camera setup is expected to have a primary wide-angle lens offering 1x and 2x zoom capabilities, as well as a secondary ultra-wide lens to capture more detailed scenes at 0.5x zoom. Earlier, design rumours suggested that these cameras will be placed vertically just like the iPhone 11.

This also suggests that the primary camera specs will remain the same as the previous model. It will still be 48MP with an f/1.6 aperture and optical quality 2X telephoto capabilities. However, the ultra wide will get a faster f/2.2 aperture from the earlier f/2.4. This allows more light to hit the sensor, leading to better low light shots.
iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models will see changes, but the Pro models will see a bigger change. First of all, the Pro models have the same design as the previous models. They still have three cameras on the back: a wide camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto camera.
The primary sensor is the same again. It’s still a 48MP with an aperture of f/1.78 that can also take 2X optical-quality 12MP telephoto shots and has 1.22 micrometer pixels. The telephoto lens is also 12MP and has an f/2.8 aperture.

As AppleInsider reports, the ultra-wide lens will have a significant upgrade to 48MP, with pixel-binning technology that allows for flexible pixel sizes: 0.7 micrometers when capturing full-resolution images and 1.4 micrometers when using quad-pixel mode for better low-light performance. It is also speculated to have a 48MP ProRaw camera lens, which gives more options in post-processing.
Capture button for all
All devices in the iPhone 16 series are expected to feature a capture button. The latest renders about the changes indicate the possible introduction of a dedicated “capture” button and a significant “action” button, pointing to Apple’s focus on making the iPhone 16 Pro more capable of mobile photography. According to reports, the quick button will allow users to adjust focus and zoom levels, giving them more control over their camera when capturing that perfect moment.
The new button will be located in the bottom-right corner of the device, so when held in landscape mode, it will be located at the top, naturally aligning with your index finger on the camera bump.
With the Capture button, users may be able to remove the camera from the lock screen, and install physical controls in its place.
