An elderly man faces water cannons while protesting against the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government on Tuesday over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old intern doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital. Earlier, a large crowd gathered around Kolkata’s College Square when the ‘Nabanna Abhiyaan’ protest march began on Tuesday. Organised by students’ forum ‘Chhatrasamaj’ and state government employees’ ‘Sangrami Jautha Manch’, the rally began from two locations — College Square in north Kolkata and Santragachhi in Howrah.

Hundreds of protesters, mainly youths, launched the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ from two locations in Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon and demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those responsible for the rape-murder of a doctor at the RG Kar hospital. Those in the rally held the chief minister responsible for failing to ensure safety of women, which they argue led to the RG Kar tragedy that sparked outrage across the country. Police used water cannon to prevent the protesters from moving towards the state secretariat.

Amid claims of possible disruptions by the Trinamool Congress and West Bengal Police, student organisation Chhatra Samaj has insisted that its ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally scheduled for August 27 will be peaceful and focus on the demand for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those responsible for the alleged rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital. On the other hand, the BJP has distanced itself from the statements made by actress and the party’s Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut about the farmers’ protest.
