It’s that time of the year. No, not Diwali. It’s time for the annual iPhone launch. On September 9, Apple is hosting the Glowtime event, where it will launch the iPhone 16 series. The series will likely include four smartphones: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Although we will get to know the final specifications only at the launch tomorrow, which will begin at 10.30 am IST on Monday, ahead of the launch, several details about the phone’s camera have already leaked. And they all suggest that some major upgrades are coming to the iPhones.
The iPhone 16 series is set to feature several camera and design upgrades that will update both the standard and Pro models. According to recent reports, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will feature a dual-camera setup at the back like the previous models, but will feature some notable improvements. The primary camera will retain the 48-megapixel wide-angle lens with 1x and 2x zoom capability, while the secondary ultra-wide lens will offer 0.5x zoom for capturing wider scenes. These cameras will be arranged vertically, reminiscent of the iPhone 11 design.
While the primary camera specifications remain unchanged with an f/1.6 aperture and 2x telephoto capability, the ultra-wide lens will see a significant upgrade. It will switch from f/2.4 to a faster f/2.2 aperture, allowing more light to hit the sensor, improving performance in low light conditions.
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models are expected to get more major changes. While the overall design will remain the same as the previous models, the Pro lineup will continue to feature a triple-camera setup: wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lens. The primary camera will still be a 48-megapixel with an f/1.78 aperture, capable of capturing 2x optical-quality 12-megapixel telephoto shots. The telephoto lens will remain at 12-megapixels with an f/2.8 aperture.
A major upgrade in the Pro model will be the ultra-wide lens, which is expected to grow to 48-megapixels using pixel-binning technology. This allows for flexible pixel sizes, enhancing low-light performance by switching between full-resolution and quad-pixel modes. Rumors also suggest the inclusion of a 48-megapixel ProRAW camera, offering more flexibility in post-processing for professional users.
Another exciting feature expected across the entire iPhone 16 series is the addition of a new capture button. This dedicated button will give users more control over their photography experience, allowing adjustments to focus and zoom levels when taking photos. Located in the bottom-right corner of the device, the capture button will naturally align with the user’s finger when the phone is held in landscape mode. It is speculated that this button could replace the on-screen camera shortcut from the lock screen, providing a more intuitive, physical control for photography.
With a 48-megapixel ultra-wide lens and a 5x telephoto lens, the iPhone 16 Pro models promise to offer significant upgrades over the iPhone 15 Pro’s 12-megapixel ultra-wide and 3x telephoto lenses, further reinforcing Apple’s focus on mobile photography.
