iOS 18 will not generate photorealistic images in Image Playground to ensure user privacy and security
iOS 18 will reportedly prioritize user privacy by not allowing photorealistic images in its new Image Playground feature. The update will include different styles for image creation and better privacy controls for other AI features.

Apple is all set to step up its AI game with the upcoming release of iOS 18. The new software update is expected to arrive alongside the launch of the iPhone 16 series. With iOS 18, Apple is likely to release access to Apple Intelligence—Apple’s proprietary, on-device generative AI software—which includes features like writing tools, advanced Siri, and image generation. Image generation in particular will leverage Apple Intelligence to provide users with the ability to create unique images. However, to prioritize user privacy and security, Apple has imposed significant limitations on the types of images that can be created using this tool.
Apple’s Image Playground will be available in various Apple applications such as Freeform, Messages, and Keynote. The software will allow users to create images in three different styles: Animation, Illustration, and Sketch. The Animation style in Image Playground creates images reminiscent of 3D animated films, while the Illustration style offers a two-dimensional, artistic look. The Sketch style creates images that are clearly hand-drawn in appearance. These styles were developed in collaboration with digital artists who provided reference images to train the AI software, ensuring that the output remained consistent and non-photorealistic. During its development, Apple also reportedly experimented with an additional style called Line Art, but it was eventually abandoned.
Now according to Apple Insider, Apple approved only three approved styles to avoid any potential confusion with real-life images, thereby reducing the risk of abuse. By preventing the creation of photorealistic images, Apple reportedly aims to reduce the potential abuse of AI-generated content. This includes the prevention of deep fakes and other forms of deceptive imagery that can compromise personal privacy and security.
In addition to style limitations, Apple is also reportedly implementing a labeling system for AI-generated images. Each image created with Image Playground will be marked via EXIF data, which is a form of image metadata. This labeling will clearly indicate the origin of the image by displaying “Apple Image Playground” as the source, Apple Insider reported, citing data from Apple’s briefing.
In addition, Apple has also taken additional steps to ensure the ethical use of its image generation software. The company has launched several investigations to prevent the creation of copyrighted, photorealistic, and adult content. Apple Insider suggests that these investigations, along with user feedback mechanisms to report inappropriate content, are aimed at maintaining the integrity and security of the generated images.
Meanwhile, Apple is also prioritizing user privacy with other AI features in iOS 18. For example, Apple is offering users the ability to use OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT with Siri. However, ChatGPT’s integration will rely exclusively on user commands. Additionally, iOS 18 will include enhanced privacy controls and enhanced data security measures. These features are designed to give users more control over their personal information and how it is used.
