Instagram launches Reels-first app for the big screen, bringing vertical video to TVs for the first time
Instagram has started testing a dedicated app for TV focused on Reels. The Meta-owned platform says this was in response to feedback from users who claimed that watching the reels together made it more entertaining. Here’s what the Instagram for TV app offers.

Instagram Reels can be addictive. But if you ever feel like doomscrolling on your phone isn’t enough, you can now watch the reels on your TV. Instagram has announced that it is launching a Reels-focused app for TVs, allowing users to use the app on a larger screen. The Meta-owned platform has been rumored to be working on a TV app for the past few months, and now it’s officially here.
Instagram says the TV app will allow users to watch Reels together for a shared viewing experience. The company says this launch addresses feedback from users who believed that watching the reels together was more enjoyable.
How does the Instagram TV app work?
The TV app works a little differently from the standard Instagram app on Android or iOS. Upon logging in, users will find Reels organized into channels that suit their interests, such as new music, sports highlights, travel and trending moments. Instagram claims that this will make it easier for users to engage with the content they like or find new trending content.
The new app’s home screen features a personalized, horizontal collection of video thumbnails. Clicking on the thumbnail brings up a full portrait video, with captions and engagement stats visible on either side. Like mobile, users can swipe to view the next reel, creating a familiar and intuitive TV viewing experience.
Add up to 5 accounts on Instagram TV app
You can add up to 5 different accounts to the Instagram for TV app. The platform says this will allow all users in the home to receive personalized content on the big screen. You can also create a separate account just for the TV app.
Additionally, users can also use Search to find creators or browse profiles and explore Instagram through the TV app.
Instagram for TV launch and availability
Right now, the Instagram for TV app is in the testing phase. It is available in the US as a pilot for Amazon Fire TV devices. The platform says it will roll out the app to more devices and regions after receiving feedback from this initial phase.
Instagram is also exploring new features for the TV app. These include the possibility of using the phone as a remote or sharing the feed with friends to make the TV experience more interactive.
