Instagram is planning to revamp the profile layout. Reports claim that ditching the square grid, the social media platform is testing to bring a vertical profile layout. We have been using the squarish grid since its inception, but now it is probably time for a big change. According to reports, the new profile layout with a vertical rectangle is currently available to only a few users.

According to spokesperson Christine Pai, the platform will gather user feedback before deciding whether to roll out the change more broadly, and acknowledged that some users may have designed their profiles around the existing square grid format, reports The Verge.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained that the platform’s shift to a vertical profile grid is in line with user behavior, as most uploaded content is already vertical (4:3 photos or 9:16 videos). He added that cropping this content to fit a square grid can be detrimental to its appearance, making a vertical grid a more natural fit.

He said the square format was created at a time when Instagram only allowed square photos to be uploaded.

The new vertical profile grid layout could be a welcome change for users who primarily create content in vertical format, as it will enable them to share posts and reels without the need for cropping, while preserving the original aspect ratio and full content.

Recently, Instagram has also increased the number of uploads for a post. Previously, you were only allowed to upload 10 media pieces in a post, but now you can add up to 20. Although not all users need that much space, it can help storytellers and content creators.

Now, it will be interesting to see how the combination of the vertical grid and 20 media pieces will pan out. The impact of Instagram’s new feature will depend on how users use it. Whatever your posting style, this update promises to transform your Instagram experience, leading to a surge in content creation and consumption.
