India’s draft first to address obesity to national obesity guidelines
India is drafting its first national obesity guidelines, now a public health emergency, with one of the four adults overweight or obese. The ICMR and the Ministry of Health will focus on the broad structure, screening, prevention and treatment protocol developed by the Ministry of Health. An important component of the guidelines will include and regulation of modern weight loss drugs such as GLP-1. This development comes in the time of significant anxiety, as the Indian Medical Association has played an alarm on the “mass misuse of these drugs”. The IMA has warned that various non-experts are determining them, stating that “mass misuse and without any proper supervision or expertise, it can be very, very dangerous.” The purpose of the new guidelines is to establish strict protocols of who can prescribe these drugs and how to use them, dealing with the health crisis and dual challenge of drug safety.
