India’s chat moment: Government chose Sarvam AI to build an indigenous Foundation model first
India has taken an important step towards its ambition to create a homegron AI model to compete against chat and Deepsek. The government has selected a domestic AI firm Saravam to lead the development of the country’s first indigenous language model (LLM).
Listen to the story

The Government of India has been pointing to an indigenous major language model (LLM) for the last few months. To remember, earlier this year, Union Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnav, announced that an AI model would be ready in 10 months, which would compete with big players, such as chat and deepsek. But this is not. In February, during the Paris AI Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is on the way to develop its big language model (LLM). And now the country is taking steps to do so. Under the mission of India, the government has finally selected Sarvam to build India’s sovereign big language model (LLM).
In the first -time trick, Sarvam is fully ready to achieve computing resources dedicated to develop a homegron foundational model from the ground. As stated in the official announcement, the model will be entitled to argument capabilities, will be vigilant, will be fluent in Indian languages, and will be designed for safe, large-scale deployment in the population.

The statement emphasized that the model was “created, deployed, and optimized in India,” relying on the domestic infrastructure and designed by “a new generation of Indian talent”. The purpose of this initiative is to promote strategic freedom, run innovation within the country and strengthen India’s long -term leadership in the field of artificial intelligence.
India’s LLM model by Sarvam: 3 models
Sarvam, a leading Indian Artificial Intelligence Company, is on a mission to build the base of sovereign AI for India and to make Jeenai a reality for Bharata. The company has already demonstrated proven ability to develop founder models in Indian languages. During the announcement, Ashwini Vaishnav said, “We are confident that Sarvam’s models will be competitive with global models.”
Sarvam’s co-founder Dr. Pratiush Kumar said, “We are deeply grateful to the Government of India for supporting its vision and support. The construction of an AI ecosystem for India has always been the main for the mission of Saravam, where our research, technology and models are strong builders to make solutions for the country.”
In addition, he said that as a part of the sovereign LLM proposal, the company is developing three model variants:
-The uplift logic and Saravam-big for generation,
-Sarvam-Samaul for Interactive Applications of World Time, and
-Sarvam-Ej for Compact on-device works.
Sarvam’s co-founder Dr. Vivek Raghavan said, “We are Deen from the responsibility given to us to build a sovereign model of India, and we are ready to build AI reaching every corner of the country. This is an important step towards building an important national AI infrastructure. Dialogue with AI that seems to be familiar, not foreigners.
Saravam is also collaborating with AI4 Barat in IIT Madras for the manufacture of these models.
