Navya Nelakuditi, a 23-year-old Indian woman, died while being treated after a car accident in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 9. Her aunt, Sirisha Nelakuduthu, who is raising funds to send her body to India, said Nelakuduthu died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, where she had undergone three major surgeries. Navya had gone to America last year for her master’s degree and when she was returning home from an internship interview in Michigan, she met with an accident. The other passenger involved in the accident survived.“The daughter of humble farmers in India, Navya moved to the US last year for her master’s degree. Her parents invested everything they had in her education, and she worked tirelessly with one goal in mind: building a career that could help them make ends meet back home,” the aunt, who lives in Frisco, Texas, wrote in the fundraising post.The aunt said the money was not only to send her body to India, but also to cover medical and ICU expenses and support her family in India. Nearly $85,835 was raised of the $150K goal in two days. In an unrelated incident, another NRI was found dead in Missouri. Singireddy Sai Sri Harikrishna, 26, who had moved to the US in 2023 to pursue a master’s degree in engineering, drowned in the Meramec River. Krishna went to Mermeck State Park near Sullivan to celebrate his birthday. According to reports, when he entered the rover for a swim, he got stuck in underwater weeds, which pulled him down. On his birthday, 11 April, he struggled, took on water and drowned. His friends started a fundraiser for the family and so far $24,283 of the $100K has been raised.
