In unique contest, Chinese woman wins $1,400 by turning off phone for 8 hours

A Chinese woman named Dong made headlines after winning a unique competition where she avoided using her mobile phone for eight hours without showing any signs of anxiety. Dong, a sales manager at a finance firm, emerged victorious among ten contestants and received a prize of 10,000 yuan (approximately Rs 1,16,820). South China Morning Post Informed.

The competition, sponsored by an undisclosed organization in Chongqing, southwestern China, required participants to hand in their electronic devices and follow strict rules while spending eight hours in a designated bed. The challenge was designed to highlight the increasing reliance on technology and encourage people to adopt mindfulness and digital detox practices.

Contestants were only allowed to leave their beds for brief toilet breaks, which were limited to five minutes each. A quota was set for the total time spent away from their bed during the eight-hour period. Food and drinks were provided, but participants had to consume them in bed. The rules also prohibit contestants from using their mobile phones, falling into deep sleep or displaying anxiety. To monitor their sleep quality and anxiety levels, contestants wore wristbands throughout the competition. To pass the time, contestants were allowed to read books or relax with their eyes closed.

Dong reportedly achieved this feat with ease, stating that she is accustomed to minimal phone usage in her daily life. She scored an impressive 88.99 out of 100, earning her a prize of 10,000 yuan. Dong’s strategy of wearing pajamas and focusing on comfort was successful, earning her the nickname “pajama sister” on social media. His everyday habits, which include reading to his child instead of mindlessly browsing his phone, also contributed to his success.

The contest sparked widespread interest on Chinese social media, with many users expressing curiosity and amusement. One user wrote, “I want to join the competition. It looks very interesting and not challenging at all.”

Another commented, “My grandma could win the top prize.”
