Avantika Malik recently opened one of the most difficult stages of her life- her separation from actor Imran Khan. Sharing his journey in a recent conversation, he revealed how experience pushed him into a deep emotional place, full of fear, sorrow and uncertainty.
Despite seeing divorce within her own family and taking her mother with pride, Avantika admitted in the healing circle with Janis Sechira that it was not easy to face her own marriage. It was thought to be on his own that he was filled with fear. She believed that she would not make her without Khan.
While reflecting a painful moment, when he and Imran decided to separate, Avantika described it as a personal loss that it felt that someone in the family had passed away. She said that she cannot stop crying and believe that life will not move forward. His fear, he explained, arises from the lack of trust in himself and his ability to manage life independently.
He accepted emotionally on the basis of Imran, and shared, “I don’t know if it is crawling from daddy issues, issues have been abandoned since childhood. So you are hanging this man in your life and so are ‘This man is going to save me and protect me and only this man can do it’ and I was sure.”
At the time of her separation, Avantika was not economically independent, which made the situation even more heavy. “I thought I would not live a day without this man,” he remembered.
While the early days were extremely painful, Avantika eventually learned to accept the situation. She began to understand that two people could just be separated, and this does not mean that something has become terrible.
He also opened how his daughter Imara reacted to separation. Like the age of any child, Imara had many questions and concerns. Avantika shared a light moment, where her daughter once asked if she would get “Naya Mama”. To which Avantika replied, “No, dear, you are trapped with this.”
Co-individual, he said, there has been something that he and Imran manage well. IMara spends the same time with both of them, which has helped maintain stability in his life. “We have joint custody. She spends half a week with me, with her half a week,” Avantika explained.
