It is a well-known fact that Mama June’s marriage to Justin Stroud is not going well. In the midst of their marriage turmoil, Stroud was shocked when Mama June surprised him with a surprise wedding renewal ceremony. Instead of renewing their wedding vows with all the talk, Stroud openly shared that he was embarrassed and upset by Mama June’s move.

In the Season 6 finale of Mama June: Family Crisis, Mama June took a big step when she decided to surprise her husband Justin Stroud with a ceremony in which they would renew their wedding vows. The Shannon family matriarch renewed her wedding vows at her vacation rental in the presence of the ashes of her late daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell.
“We’re going to have a little ceremony right here, swan buns!” June announced, while Stroud stood silent and surprised. Opening up about his inner thoughts about the surprise ceremony, Justin shared that he felt disappointed because the ceremony made him feel like he wasn’t heard and understood correctly by his partner.
“What the hell is this? This is embarrassing. I’m upset. I feel like I’m not being heard. When I asked June if she really meant what she said in her vows, I thought this is what I really wanted to say. You can’t stand here and repeat this over and over and think it means something, I want you to live it, not just say it,” Stroud said.
Why did Mama June decide to renew her wedding vows?
When Stroud expressed her concerns about the ceremony, June looked directly at the camera and said she thought Justin would prefer to live somewhere else. Mama June supported her decision to have a vow renewal, claiming it was the only way she could prove they took their vows seriously during their actual wedding.
Later, during the ceremony, the officiant asked Justin if he would like to renew his vows. Justin commented, “Yes, I would. Should I just say that right now?” “Well, you should just speak from the heart. That’s the way it should be,” Mama June responded.
While taking their vows, Mama June became emotional as she expressed her gratitude for Justin’s continued support during her late daughter’s battle with cancer. But it all felt like a futile effort to Justin, who believes Mama June didn’t understand him when he requested they have an open, two-way conversation with each other.
Justin added, “I can’t believe she thinks that this is going to make everything okay. She has to hear me say it every time, like we need to communicate and we need to work together. When you do a vow renewal, it’s something that both the husband and wife know about, not just the wife going and planning it.”
