IITian with 18 years of experience was earning 70 LPA, now not getting job after retrenchment
An IITian recently shared his situation on Reddit. The man revealed that he was fired from a top company where he used to earn 70 LPA. Now, even after months, they are unable to get a job as their savings are depleting at an alarming rate.

In India, IITs are considered the pinnacle of educational institutions, especially for engineering or technical subjects. Every year lakhs of students prepare for the entrance exam in the hope of getting into the IITs. However, sometimes life can be difficult even after achieving your dream of joining one of the most prestigious institutions of the country. Such appears to be the case with one Reddit user who adopts the online persona u/pela_peli.
On the subreddit r/IndiaCareers, the user explained his situation. After cracking IIT, he spent 18 years across multiple industries implementing new technology. Things were going very well as the IITian was earning 70 LPA.
However, the situation changed completely after he was fired from his job. The user wrote, “I was fired from my job by one of the Nifty50 companies due to restructuring. Seven months ago I was earning around 70Lpa, now I am back to zero.” “My savings are draining really fast and only have 2 months of runway left,” the man added.
To make matters worse, the layoffs occurred right after the individual purchased a new home. This forced the user to rent his new house just to pay the EMI. He further said, “I recently bought a big house but I had to rent it out to someone else because I couldn’t pay the EMIs without my job.”

IITian struggling to get a job
The user put all his time and effort into finding employment again. Now, one would think that an IITian with 18 years of experience and an already hefty salary package could easily get a job even in a tough market. Unfortunately, the reality has been very different. The user said, “Sadly, I am not even getting any calls. In the last 7 months I have only received a few calls from consultants and got only 2 interviews.”
In desperation, the IT giant also tried using premium services of professional networking platforms like LinkedIn, but to no avail.
The person is stuck in such a situation that they are willing to work for less than the Rs 70 LPA package. He wrote, “I don’t mind being paid less, but I am not getting calls either. It’s all coming to an end and I am frustrated now.”
The internet sympathizes with the harsh reality
The Reddit post quickly went viral. It was shared on X by another IITian, Ravi Handa, who runs Handa Education Services. Handa elaborated on the reality of IITians in the job market compared to high expectations. “‘IITians with 15-20 years of work experience earn much more than 80 LPA,’ he wrote. No. “Most of them don’t.”
Handa made it clear that IIT graduates who perform well in their career or go abroad earn the same amount.

One user acknowledged that the IT market is unlikely to recover any time soon. He commented, “The current IT landscape is truly brutal, and I believe it is not going to subside in the near future.”

Another person claimed that he had heard similar stories before. “This is not an isolated case; many professionals with strong experience are facing the same challenge,” he wrote.

Big tech companies like Amazon, Google and TCS have laid off thousands of employees at a time when we are seeing rapid advancements in AI.
