Kate Winslet recently recalled a memorable event that included an unexpected but sweet reunion with her and Leonardo DiCaprio’s violinist Jonathan Evan-Jones from the film Titanic. He shared this story during his appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
Winslet encountered Jonathan while supervising the score recording for her latest film, Lee. The veteran actress told Norton that she was at Abbey Road to score. He expressed his confusion about how he got Alexandre Desplat to agree to a score for his film. The actress said he was “wonderful”.
Reader Starr then remembered that she was there, looking through the glass at the stage where the musicians were – “the huge, 120-piece orchestra –” when a violinist caught her attention and she thought, “I look at that face. I know.”
She couldn’t remember exactly who the person was. She reflected, “And then the day goes by, and some musicians start saying, ‘This is (that)!’ And they’re kind of pointing to that.”
Winslet shared that she began to question her connection with a particular person and who they might be. She said, “At the end of the day, I thought, ‘Okay, I’ve got to go in.’ So I went in, and he said, ‘Kate, it’s me!'” At that moment she realized who it was.
He told Norton that when the Titanic sank, the violinist stood up and said, “Come on, guys,” before he started playing. She recognized it was him and described how incredible the feeling was.
The actress shared that she had many moments in the film where people she had worked with before or knew for a long time and grew up in the industry and “they just came for her”, which was amazing.
Jonathan has contributed not only to Titanic but also to many other projects, which makes the pace of his decades-long career all the more interesting. His works also include Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, The Batman, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Spectre, Kong: Skull Island.
As for Winslet’s latest film, Lee is based on the model turned World War II correspondent who worked as a photographer. Her name was Elizabeth ‘Lee’ Miller.
In addition to the acclaimed actress, the project also stars Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgård, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Noemi Merlant, James Murray and many more.
