Chet Hanks, the eldest child of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, has spoken about his journey to quit drinking. Hanks, who became a father in April 2016, said he no longer has the urge to drink. There were several liquor stores in Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets, but that wasn’t enough to make him quit drinking.
staying strong
Chet is 33 and has been sober for almost ten years. He gives his thoughts on how to stay on the right path to abstinence, especially for those in the early stages. What does he recommend? Stay away from places where you might be tempted to drink or use drugs. This has worked for him.
In surreal life, Chet found solace in one of his fellow cast members, Tyler Posey. Besides loving Teen Wolf, it’s also nice that he’s sober like him. It was very unusual that there was another person in this house who didn’t take any drugs or alcohol. This created an unexpected bond between them that really affected him.
Overcoming addiction
Chet Hanks has always been open about his drug and alcohol abuse. His drug addicts were also shocked when he confessed to excessive cocaine use.
He started taking drugs at the age of sixteen and was admitted to a rehabilitation center to recover from his addiction in the last month of 2014. He posted a video on Instagram in 2015 in which he explained how much crack smoking was bothering him in addition to other drug addictions.
He credits his ex-wife Tiffany Miles for this change, who told him she was pregnant with their daughter Micaiah. “For me, it took something as big as becoming a father to make that change,” he says. According to Chet Hanks in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2018, he had to upend his life and start anew after his daughter was born.
Family support and a new beginning
He appreciates the support he received from his parents and family members, including Micaiah. His father was with him throughout the process, as well as Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, who were in their late sixties at the time. In addition, Hanks also has a younger brother named Truman, while he has two half-siblings (Elizabeth and Colin) from his father’s side.
MTV premiered Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets, in which Hanks explains how he overcame his addiction. It shows how change can happen and how important it is to have a strong support system around you within its content.
Furthermore, Chet Hanks’ journey to recovery from alcohol addiction has encouraged many young people by proving that with determination and help, they can live normal lives once again.
