The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I & B) has issued a notice to the makers of the controversial Marathi film on the Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. After public resentment on the film ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’, ministers of the Ministry and Government have stepped into intervening.

Hindu organizations wrote to the film board, objected to the Marathi film ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’, and demanded a ban. Controversy around the film continues. On Thursday, the Ministry of I & B issued a notice to the manufacturers, asking them to provide evidence supporting the story, citing several complaints.

Protest against the film ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’, Chhatrapati proceeded due to a secular depiction of Shivaji Maharaj. In response, the Maharashtra government is now considering the cancellation of the film’s certification. The right -wing groups have accused the film of distorting the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s speech in protest against the film was interrupted at a government ceremony on Tuesday.

Now, BJP ministers have commented on reconsideration of censor board approval for the film. This is the question at the center of controversy: Was Shivaji Maharaj mainly a Hindu warrior-Raja or a secular ruler? This debate has created a divided opinion in Maharashtra for many years.

Commenting on the controversy of Ashish Sheller’s cultural minister ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’, said, “Secretary cultural matters will be investigated how the film was sent to Cannes. The film will be removed from the list of ear. A film director has received a notice. If a film is released, it could be a law and order.”

Although it is not clear who plays the character of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji’, many popular Indian actors and production houses have been fascinated by the stories of Maratha warriors. Prior to this film, actor Sharad Kelkar portrayed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in ‘Tanhaji: The Unsang Warrior’, which included actor Ajay Devgan in a Titular role.

‘Kantara’ actor Rishab Shetty is currently doing a film called ‘The Pride of India: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’. The film is scheduled to release on 21 January 2027.
