Huma Qureshi calls for equal punishment for online abuse: Dirty DMs are not harmless
Huma Qureshi addressed the seriousness of online abuse and called for strong action against digital harassment, drawing attention to the need for equal treatment of offenders online and in public space.

Actress Huma Qureshi has spoken openly about the growing issue of online abuse faced by women and argued that digital harassment should be given the same legal importance as harassment in public places. Speaking during a recent interaction he said that the internet cannot be seen as a consequence-free space for inappropriate behaviour.
Sharing her own experience with unwanted and offensive messages, Qureshi recalled, “There are comments like, ‘Post a picture in a bikini’, and I’m like – what are you doing bossIt’s disgusting. It is sad.”
while talking to male feministShe also emphasized that cyber harassment is not a “light” version of misconduct because it occurs online.
“In my opinion, the punishment for harassing a woman on the street and harassing her online should be the same. There is no difference,” he said. The ‘Maharani’ actor said, “If you are sneaking into my DMs, sending dirty pictures or writing obscene comments on my posts, you will have to face the same consequences as someone who misbehaves in a public place.”
The actor said that many people still consider trolling and unwanted messages as incidental or harmless, but the emotional impact and violation of dignity remains the same. Qureshi also urged society to stop controlling women’s autonomy – be it their clothes, their work, their bodies, or their lifestyle.
She said, “I just want to say one simple thing – please stop commenting on how women dress, what make-up they wear, how they live, what they do, what time they come home or what they weigh.”
Qureshi’s recent work ‘Delhi Crime 3’ is garnering a lot of praise. Starring Rajesh Tailang, Shefali Shah and Rasika Duggal, the new season is currently streaming on Netflix.
