Huawei will launch the new MatePad Pro and MatePad Air on August 6

Must read

Huawei will unveil two new tablets, the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 and the Huawei MatePad Air 12, on Tuesday (August 6) next week. However, official details are scant at the moment.

The following images were used to describe the new tablets:

Note that the company already has a few recent Pro tablets. For example, the Huawei MatePad Pro 13.2 (2023) has a notch for its dual front-facing cameras (13MP wide and 8MP ultra wide). There’s also the Huawei MatePad Pro 11 (2024) with a punch hole camera in the corner. Neither design is used in the new Pro model – in fact, we can’t see the front-facing camera at all, so it’s either hidden in the bezel or it’s under the display.

As for the Air, the Huawei MatePad Air (2023) has a different camera design than the one shown above, with two lenses instead of one on the back.

Executive director Richard Yu posted this image on Weibo. It was created using the new Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 and the stable version of the GoPaint app, which will also be released on August 6. Yu promises major improvements and optimizations from the app’s original public beta. The app supports air gestures with the stylus plugged into the keyboard cover.

That’s all we have for official information, but a few months ago leaks revealed that the MatePad Pro 12.2 could use the Kirin 9010 chipset and feature 100W charging. The MatePad Air 12 will support 66W charging instead (chipset is unknown).

The Pro model may have satellite SMS functionality, just like the MatePad Pro 11 (2024) has. Both the Pro and Air models support NearLink, a short-range wireless communication technology. It was introduced in the Huawei Mate 60 series and is also present in the Pura 70 series. Some buds and styluses also support it, it is a replacement for Bluetooth (a Low Energy mode offers 12Mbps at less than 2mA power consumption) and Wi-Fi (Basic mode goes up to 1.2Gbps).
