How India is helping cyclone-hit Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and drought-hit Namibia

India has sent a second consignment of relief materials to Myanmar under its Operation Sadbhav, launched two days ago to help the Southeast Asian country deal with Typhoon Yagi.

Typhoon Yagi, said to be the most powerful storm in Asia this year, has caused heavy floods in various parts of Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.

Typhoon Yagi is named after the Japanese word for goat and the constellation of Capricorn.

In Myanmar, the storm killed hundreds of people, caused massive property damage, and affected millions.

India today airlifted a consignment of 32 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar through an Indian Air Force IL-76 transport aircraft, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

It said the consignment included “gensets, temporary shelters, hygiene kits, solar lamps and other relief materials.”

The Indian government on Monday dispatched 21 tonnes of relief material within hours of receiving a request from Myanmar, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. Relief material such as ready-to-eat meals, kitchen sets, solar lamps, medical supplies, mosquito nets, water purification tablets and disinfectants were sent to Yangon on Monday on Indian Naval Ship INS Satpura.

“In line with our long-standing ‘Act East’ and ‘Neighbourhood First’ policies, Operation Sadbhav is part of India’s broader efforts to support the friendly people of Myanmar,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

India also sent relief materials to Vietnam and Laos.

Relief sent to Namibia

India today also sent 1,000 metric tonnes of rice to help drought-hit African country Namibia.

“As a reliable HADR (humanitarian assistance and disaster relief) provider and a trusted friend, India is providing food assistance to the people of Namibia to strengthen their food security in the wake of the recent drought,” the Ministry of External Affairs said on October 15.

The consignment of relief material left from Nhava Sheva port today.

On Saturday, India also announced humanitarian assistance for another African country, Chad, where a massive fire broke out in the capital N’Djamena on June 19. Several people were killed and injured in the fire and explosion at an arms and ammunition depot.
