Lebanon’s Hezbollah said on Sunday it fired Katyusha rockets at northern Israel in response to an Israeli airstrike overnight that targeted a weapons depot and wounded six people, according to state media.
There has been almost daily cross-border firing between Hezbollah and Israeli forces backed by Hamas since the war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7 following an attack by the Palestinian militant group on southern Israel.
Iran-backed Hezbollah said it targeted the Dafna region of northern Israel with Katyusha rockets “in response to attacks by the Israeli enemy that hit civilian targets in the city of Adloun, wounding several people.”
The attack came after the Israeli military said its air force had “strike two Hezbollah weapons storage sites in southern Lebanon containing rockets and additional weapons.”
Late on Saturday Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said “the Israeli enemy attacked the town of Adloun”, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the Israeli border, later adding that the target was “an ammunition depot”.
“Six civilians were slightly injured,” NNA reported on Sunday, although the figure was put at three the previous night.
NNA said rockets were still exploding nearly an hour after the attacks were first reported, and videos circulating online showed several large explosions in Adloon.
“Shrapnel from the explosion reached nearby villages,” NNA said.
Hezbollah said in separate statements on Sunday that three of its fighters were killed.
Earlier on Saturday, Hezbollah and its Palestinian ally Hamas fired rockets and explosives-laden drones at Israeli targets.
Hezbollah said it fired dozens of Katyusha rockets toward northern Israel in retaliation for Israeli attacks that injured civilians.
Hamas’ armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said it also fired rockets from southern Lebanon towards an Israeli military base in the Upper Galilee.
At least 518 people have been killed in violence in Lebanon since October, according to an AFP report. Most of the dead are fighters, but at least 104 civilians are also among them.
According to Israeli officials, 18 soldiers and 13 civilians were killed on the Israeli side.
