Health Advice
The Amarnath Yatra involves trekking at an altitude of about 15,000 feet. Hence, altitude sickness is quite common. If symptoms like nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, loss of appetite, blurred vision, bladder-bowel dysfunction, chest tightness, rapid breathing and increased heart rate occur, do not hesitate to seek medical help.
Precautions
1. At least a month before the trip, take active steps to improve your physical fitness by taking a 4-5 km walk every day in the morning or evening. Deep breathing exercises like yoga can improve oxygen efficiency in the body.
2. Walk slowly while climbing steep inclines and take breaks whenever needed. Drink at least 5 liters of water to avoid headaches and dehydration. Also, consume enough carbohydrates to reduce symptoms of fatigue and prevent low blood sugar levels.
3. Get a medical checkup done before travelling. If you are taking any medicines, consult a doctor about them and also if they can pose any risk during the journey. If possible, carry portable oxygen with you.

1. Keep enough woolen clothes in your bag as the temperature can drop below 5 degrees Celsius anytime. Keep clothes and food items in a waterproof bag.
