Happy Gilmore 2 begins shooting this September, with Adam Sandler in the lead role

Happy Gilmore is making its mark among fans as this 1996 sports-comedy classic has been given the green light for a sequel by Netflix. Starring Adam Sandler, Happy Gilmore has a fan base of its own as an aspiring hockey player goes against the odds to win a pro golf championship and save his grandmother’s house.

The streamer has released several updates on Happy Gilmore 2 as it gears up for production later this year, with veteran Adam Sandler already cast in the lead role.

During an upfront presentation, Netflix confirmed that work had officially begun on the Happy Gilmore sequel in May. Now, according to Netflix, the film is set to begin production on September 5, 2024 under the comedy supervision of director Kyle Newacheck, while screenwriters Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler will pen the script.

Sandler and Newacheck previously collaborated on the comedy hit and Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, Murder Mystery.

Happy Gilmore is coming back after 30 years, so the filmmakers are making sure this time around is worthwhile. This time around, the new filming location will be in New Jersey, whereas the original film was shot in Vancouver, Canada in the summer of 1995.

Without much ado, Happy Gilmore is expected to wrap production in two months on November 18, 2024. Apart from Sandler, Happy Madison Productions will also produce the upcoming sequel.

Apart from the 57-year-old star, little information has been revealed about the cast. It is not known whether veteran stars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald will reprise their roles as Virginia Venit and Shooter McGavin, respectively.

The official release date for Happy Gilmore 2 is yet to be announced.

Happy Gilmore star Christopher McDonald drops first teaser for sequel

While Happy Gilmore 2 was only recently officially confirmed by Netflix, Christopher McDonald shared the exciting news in early March. The actor, who played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore, teased the update during a radio interview and said Sandler showed him a first draft of the sequel.

Speaking to Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, the 69-year-old star revealed that he met Sandler a few weeks ago when Sandler surprised him with an already finished draft for Happy Gilmore 2. “He said to me, ‘Macdonald, you’d like this,’ I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘How about this,’ and he showed me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2,'” Macdonald recalled during the interview, according to Variety.

The actor also raised the possibility of the film not being made by asking interviewers to cut the update from the audio so he wouldn’t be called a liar. “I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. The fans demand it, damn it!” the Grease 2 star confirmed.

Happy Gilmore was directed by Dennis Dugan and Sandler wrote the screenplay, which launched him into the comedy film industry.

This classic film is the story of a hockey player with anger issues who somehow discovers his passion for golf. He decides to compete for money to save his grandmother’s house, but faces challenges along the way as he encounters arrogant professional golfer, McDonald’s Shooter McGavin.
