On December 14, we honor the pioneer of the Golden Age of Bollywood and founder of RK Films, the great Raj Kapoor. With memorable roles in Awara, Shree 420 and Mera Naam Joker, Kapoor’s signature ‘Awara’ character and phenomenal storytelling has left a lasting legacy. On his birth anniversary, let’s revisit the touching moment when his grandson Ranbir Kapoor was reminded of his grandfather’s rich legacy while seeking acting advice.
In a conversation on Aap Ki Adalat, late actor Rishi Kapoor shared a memorable moment when his son Ranbir Kapoor called him for advice on lip-syncing during a movie scene. Struggling with the challenge of syncing to a pre-recorded song, Ranbir approached his father and asked for tips. Surprised by the call, Rishi humorously reminds Ranbir that even though he is Raj Kapoor’s grandson and Rishi Kapoor’s son, he still needs help with this.
He shared, “I said you are Raj Kapoor’s grandson, Rishi Kapoor’s son and you are asking me this? He said, ‘I don’t know how to do this.'”
Rishi then advised Ranbir Kapoor to sing so loudly that his co-stars asked him to stop as it was out of tune. According to him, this was the key to making it look authentic on screen. He explained that although the audience knows that the song is being sung by iconic playback singers like Kishore Kumar or Mohammed Rafi, it is important for the actors to make it seem like they are singing.
To celebrate Raj Kapoor’s centenary, a special Raj Kapoor 100 Film Festival will screen his iconic films like Awara, Shree 420, Sangam and Mera Naam Joker across PVR-Inox and Cinepolis cinemas across 135 locations in India. The festival offers an affordable ticket price, making it accessible to a wide audience.
On the night of the premiere, there will be a special open-air screening, with a live orchestra playing the unforgettable music by Shankar-Jaikishan. Additionally, the Kapoor family will present rare, behind-the-scenes footage from Raj Kapoor’s films, adding a touch of nostalgia.
The festival will conclude with a grand toast to the legendary filmmaker, with a spectacular fireworks display and the haunting sounds of The Show Must Go On.
