Mehta, who has previously directed critically acclaimed films like Shahid and Aligarh, spoke to India Today Digital about whether he is thinking of re-releasing any of his previous films. Over time, his films have also become classics, watched and discussed by audiences across the world. However, he revealed that he does not have the budget to do so.

“I would love to see them re-released, but re-releases are also very expensive. I mean, the movies that have been re-released, a lot of money has been spent to re-release them,” he told us during the interview.

Pointing to Tumbbad, which is currently competing with his film at the box office, he said, “The kind of money that has been spent on Tumbbad right now, they have more hoardings than Buckingham Murders. The marketing budget that they have put in is phenomenal. And hats off to them for that.” Soham (Shah), for putting his money where his heart is,

He said, “I don’t have that money. I am a filmmaker with no other business. So I survive on what I earn. I run my house with what I earn through my labour.”

There is also a lot of talk about Tumbbad surpassing The Buckingham Murders at the box office. Mehta, who has always opted to release his films in limited theatres, admitted that The Buckingham Murders was bigger in scale than his other releases, but still not as much as is generally expected.

Talking about the box office figures, he told us, “I believe that my producers’ investment should be safe. Before we started this film, we knew that the investment in this film was safe. Most of the money had already been recovered and we knew that a theatrical release would be a bonus. But yes, we jointly, the producers and I, decided that we will release it in theatres; it will be a limited release.”

However, he doesn’t like the idea of people who have no stake in the film discussing it. “I have always been strongly opposed to the idea of people having no stake in the film.” People’s discussion at the box office Which has nothing to do with the money of the film. I think you should see the film in its true form. You should evaluate the film in its true form and not make the box office a yardstick. It just keeps some people’s kitchens running, due to which they limit the films to box office numbers,” Mehta further added.

The Buckingham Murders was released in cinemas on 13 September. premiered at several film festivals It stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Aish Tandon, Ranveer Brar and Keith Allen in lead roles.
