Halsey reflects on different musical eras from the 2000s to the ’70s in the announcement trailer for her fifth studio album The Great Impersonator. The Eastside singer never fails to tell a great story and her new confessional album is no different. The pop star shared her creative process with a clip that showed glimpses of her in the studio and in various celebrity cosplays.
She begins by admitting that “I really thought this album would be my last album.” In the clip, she looks back at what her life would have been like if she hadn’t changed her on-stage identity from Ashley (her real name) to Halsey and made her musical debut in 2014.
She wonders what her life would be like if she entered the music industry “in the early 2000s? In the ’90s? In the ’80s? In the ’70s?” and with a voiceover she appears on screen dressed like pop icons from each era, including David Bowie and Britney Spears. “Would I still be Halsey every time? In every timeline, would I still get sick? Would I be a mom?”
The teaser also features a clip of her previously released single Lucky which features a rendition of Britney Spears’ song of the same name, as well as a few unreleased songs inspired by the aesthetics and sounds of different decades. “If it all ended right now, is this the person you’d be proud to leave behind? Is this you?” she says in the video.
Earlier this year, the Colours singer released her first single The End from her new album. Through the emotional tune, she expressed her struggles after being diagnosed with Lupus SLE, and revealed that she is “lucky to be alive.” Lucky and Lonely Is the Muse are the other records on the album.
Her previous album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The about-face beauty founder released the single So Good in 2022 and Die 4 Me in 2023, which managed to find a spot on the Billboard 100 chart.
Halsey has not announced a release date but according to her website it will be released in 2024.
