This trend probably stems from an old interview where Govinda claimed that he was approached for the original film Avatar film.
In a conversation with Mukesh Khanna, Govinda said that he had rejected the film – which eventually became one of the biggest films of all time – because his idea did not sell.
Elaborating, Govinda said, “I had also given up the Rs 21.5 crore offer, although I remember it because it was painful. I had met a Sardarji in America and pitched him the business idea of dealing in sweets and delicacies. A few years later, he said the idea worked wonders for him. There, he introduced me to James Cameron. He asked me to do a film with James, so I invited him over dinner to discuss it.”
The actor further said, “I had also given the title of the picture… I said, ‘Avatar will be made for the second time!’ Toh tells me, ‘The hero is lame!’ I said, ‘Lame? Govinda! hello? I’m not picturing you! (I gave the title of the film. I said the film will be made for the second time. So, he told me the actor is lame. I said lame?) He said, ‘I am offering you Rs 18 crore.’ I said, ‘I don’t want your 18 crores.’ He told that this shoot will last for 410 days. I said okay, but if I painted my body I would have to stay in the hospital!”
Govinda’s wife Sunita Ahuja addressed the claims during a podcast with Uoffi Javed. He said, “Hey man, I don’t know when this offer came, I must have been with Govinda for 40 years. I don’t know when that director-producer of Avatar came. I don’t know whether it happened. I neither lie nor take anyone’s side. I don’t support lies (Hey man, I don’t know when it was offered. I’ve been with Govinda for 40 years. I don’t even know when it was offered) Avatar Director-producer came. I don’t even know if it actually happened or not. I neither lie nor take sides. I do not support lies).”
