The Gotham Awards nominations include some of this year’s best releases, including Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers from Amazon MGM Studios, which earned a Best Feature nomination. Sean Baker’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Enora has earned nominations in four major categories, including Best Feature, Best Director, Outstanding Lead Performance for Mickey Madison and Outstanding Supporting Performance for Yura Borisov.
Another production from Amazon MGM, the historical drama Nickel Boys, won in the best feature and best director categories, and Brandon Wilson received an award for breakthrough performer. Until last year, the awards show highlighted indie-centric and low-budget films rather than expensive and extravagant films. However, the budget threshold for eligibility was removed this year, opening up equal opportunities for big-budget studios and streamers.
Netflix’s His Three Daughters, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, also earned nominations in the Best Director and Outstanding Supporting Performance (Natasha Lyonne) categories. Danielle Deadwyler of Piano Lessons received a nomination for the Best Supporting Category.
Jeffrey Sharp, President of the Gotham Film & Media Institute, announced the nominations and explained their selection process. He said that nominating committees prioritized an “independent perspective” when selecting candidates. “This year’s nominations celebrate voices from around the world, reflecting the growing interest in international cinema by audiences everywhere,” he said.
