Turn your headphones into real-time translators
Imagine you’re listening to a lecture in French or watching a Korean drama without subtitles, and understanding every word. That’s exactly what Google’s new real-time headphone translation experience promises to deliver.
Currently available in beta through the Translate app on Android, this feature lets you listen to instant translations directly into your headphones while maintaining the tone, emphasis, and rhythm of each speaker. This means conversations sound natural rather than robotic, and it’s easier to tell who is speaking.
Rose Yao, Google’s vice president of product management for the Search vertical, said in a blog post that the feature can help in all kinds of situations, whether you’re trying to chat in another language, follow a foreign language’s speech, or simply enjoy a show abroad. To use it, users simply need to open the Translate app, tap “Live Translate” and start listening. The app will instantly translate what is being said into the listener’s chosen language. The best part? It works with any pair of headphones, not just Google’s own hardware.
The beta is now available in the US, Mexico, and India, supporting over 70 languages. However, iOS users will have to wait a little longer, with Google saying it plans to expand availability to iPhones and more countries in 2026.
Better translation with Gemini AI
While the headphone experience steals the spotlight, Gemini AI integration inside Google Translate could be the big long-term upgrade. Powered by Google’s advanced language models, Gemini brings a more nuanced understanding of text and context to translation, meaning you’re less likely to get literal or strange results.
For example, an English phrase like “stealing my thunder” will no longer be translated word-for-word. Instead, Gemini interprets the actual meaning of the phrase, captures the cultural and emotional tone behind it, and presents it naturally in the target language.

English speakers can now learn German, while speakers of other languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Mandarin Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, Italian, Romanian, and Swedish, can practice English.
The updated language-learning tool now includes useful tips based on your pronunciation and speaking practice, as well as a streak tracker that shows how many consecutive days you’ve been learning, a motivational feature reminiscent of Duolingo’s popular streak system.
With this update, Google is not only improving translations; It’s positioning Translate as a complete language learning companion, blending AI feedback with gamified progress tracking.
