New UPI Rules

After Google Play notification, Paytm has gone to calm worrying customers, as its UPI paid a widespread alarm about the future of the handle. Fintech giant on Friday clarified that regular payment is unaffected, and only a small group of users need to take action.

The company, led by Vijay Shekhar Sharma, said that the report states that Paytm’s UPI services were on the verge of shutting down. The firm said, “There will be no disruption for users when they pay UPI on Paytm. Both consumer and merchant transactions will remain comfortable.”

So, what really changes? According to Paytm, the update applies only to recurring payments, think of memberships such as YouTube premium or Google One Storage.

“This means that if a user was paying for Paytm UPI for a user YouTube premium or Google for a storage or any recurring platform, they would just need to convert their old @Paytm handle into a new handle attached to their bank, which is @PTHDFC, @PTAXIS, @PTYES or @PtSbi.”

To clarify things, if your UPI ID was Rajesh@Paytm, it will now become Rajesh@PthdfC or Rajesh@PTSBI (based on the bank you are connected). One-band payment, such as scanning the QR code at a shop or transferring money to a friend, will not be affected at all.

Why shift?

The Twiks is part of Paytm’s migration for the twice new UPI handle after India’s National Payment Corporation (NPCI) approves the company to act as a third party application provider (TPAP). Essentially, it is a housekeeping change to maintain a smooth membership billing under the new rules.

Confused, Paytm has insisted that everyday transactions will remain exactly the same. The firm said, “This is a simple update to ensure uninterrupted recurring payments, while all other UPI transactions on the app continue without any changes.”

What paniced?

The play began when Google Play warned a notification that the UPI handle of Paytm would stop working soon. Alert read: “On 31 August, @Paytm UPI handle will be removed and will not be an accepted form of payment on Google Play. It is in accordance with the National Payment Corporations (NCPI) of India.”

With a little reference, users were expected to be the worst – that Paytm UPI was being closed themselves. In fact, the change applies only to automatic membership renewal, and the time limit is 31 August 2025. From 1 September, the old @Paytm handle will no longer be valid for the recurring mandate on Google Play.

What should Paytm UPI users do?

If you use Paytm UPI for recurring membership, you have got the option. Users who currently rely on Paytm UPI for recurring payments will require a small adjustment. They can update their mandate by adding their membership payments with a new Paytm UPI ID associated with their bank (eg @pthdfc or @ptsbi), switch their recurring payments to any other UPI app like Google Pay or PhonePe, or just choose an alternative to using an alternative to using a Debit or Credit Card.

All the rest, which use Paytm only for transfer, purchase or bill payment, do not need to lift the finger.

a storm in a teacup?

While the Google Play notice was technically accurate, Paytm says it was “incomplete” and therefore caused unnecessary nervousness. Along with relying on the app for daily payments, a sign of even dissolution was enough to destabilize users.

In fact, the change is more than backnd migration than customer headaches. Membership needs to be updated once, and then it is the usual business.

So if you were worrying that Paytm UPI was about to disappear, then relax: Your QR code, merchant payments and money transfer will continue to run normally. It is only those monthly membership that are for music, cloud storage or streaming platforms that require a quick refresh before the end of August.
