Google has introduced a significant security upgrade to its latest Pixel 9 series, making them the first Android phones to feature a new Satellite SOS function. The feature, similar to Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite, allows users to contact emergency services and share their location, even when cellular or Wi-Fi networks aren’t available. The service will initially be available only on Pixel 9 devices in the US, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.

How Satellite SOS Works

The Satellite SOS feature will be activated automatically on Pixel 9 phones when all required software updates and satellite network registrations are completed. Users will receive a notification when the service goes live. The feature is designed for emergency situations where there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. When users dial 911 on their Pixel 9 phones and there is no network available, the phone will prompt them to use Satellite SOS.

After tapping the Satellite SOS option, users will need to fill out an emergency questionnaire on the screen describing the situation. They can choose to notify their emergency contacts by sharing their location and emergency details or opt out of this feature. Once ready, users will need to follow the on-screen prompts to position their phone correctly for satellite connection. Connection and response times may vary depending on the user’s location and surrounding conditions. When connected, emergency services will communicate with the user via text message, and it is advisable to be outside with a clear view of the sky for the best connection.

Availability and cost

Satellite SOS will be offered on Pixel 9 devices at no additional cost for the first two years. However, the feature is currently limited to the US except Hawaii and Alaska. Google has not yet announced plans to expand the service to other regions or devices.

Google introducing Satellite SOS in the Pixel 9 series is a clear response to similar features offered by Apple. By integrating this life-saving technology, Google aims to provide a vital safety net for users who find themselves in emergencies without network coverage. The move also highlights Google’s commitment to enhancing user safety and keeping pace with industry innovations.
